Today True Friend and I made the drive to and from the Massachusetts border. I made a courageous move and left my car there. True Friend decided she would stay around a few days for vacation. That spurred the idea of slack packing for a few days.
On our return from Massachusetts, we stopped in Rutland for a late lunch at the Inn at the Long Trail. True Friend’s misfortune put us there at the same time as Songbird. The last time we had hung out was on the 4th of July in New Jersey. He was hiking North on the AT. Our timing was just right and we were able to head over to Ben and Jerry’s together. He will finish his hike in just a matter of days.
This special moment for him had me feeling very reflective. In 2016, I met him on the AT in the white mountains of New Hampshire. I was about a month into my SOBO journey and he was only weeks in. Fast as could be and ultralight, I figured I would never see him again. As it turns out, he got off trail not long after. Through the years and through social media we stayed loosely connected. When I saw he was near the Delaware Water Gap, I jumped into action. I picked up him and Energy and did my best to slack pack and support them through New Jersey. In such short time spans people become so interconnected. It is amazing how the vulnerability of the wild can do that. I will forever be thankful.
So glad for that connection and our new found friendship with Energy. Although my Long Trail hike didn’t go as planned, there were so many wonderful memories. I am grateful for getting to hike with Energy in New Year and again in the fall in Massachusetts up Greylock Mt.
Me too! Let’s pick a weekend to get together for a hike. I’ll reach out to you both offline.
